Booker T. Washington to W.E.B. Du Bois

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois fiercely debated the role of education in the life of African Americans, with Washington promoting industrial education, industry, and patience in attaining social parity with whites, and Du Bois advocating classical liberal arts education for a “Talented Tenth” and full social and political equality. In this letter, however, Washington commends Du Bois for his investigation of public schools in the South, just as Du Bois had congratulated Washington for his 1895 speech known as the Atlanta Compromise. By the time this letter was written, it is likely that Du Bois had already singled out Washington’s strategy for racial uplift for criticism in his book The Souls of Black Folk, which was published the following year.
